Lawmakers Prioritize Ending Abortion Amid COVID-19 Crisis
As Oklahomans struggle with the lack of COVID-19 resources, historic unemployment and an impending budget shortfall, the House has chosen to prioritize abortion. We have seen lots of bullsh*t out of the Oklahoma Capitol, but this level of carelessness and pandering is inexcusable.
Lawmakers already upended the democratic process in bypassing a committee vote so SB 195 will go right to its final vote before the governor’s desk. Floor leader and bill author, Rep Jon Echols, is obviously abusing the current state of emergency, while neglecting those Oklahomans who need help the most in this dire moment. It is an atrocious, slimy thing to do and we need you to act now to stop him.
SB 195 could be called for a vote at any time, because Echols believes he is not beholden to rules or democratic norms. Thanks to this underhanded move to skip a committee vote, the bill is at the final stage in the legislative process before the Governor’s signature, so please make a phone call to your House Rep, and Echol’s office IMMEDIATELY. Tell your loved ones to take action too!
Please take these four steps to fight SB 195:
Call your own state House Representative now. Tell them to stop SB 195, and vote no if it’s is heard. Find their contact information here. Remember phone calls are always the most impactful way to reach a lawmaker.
Call House Leader Jon Echols and tell him what an atrocity it is to put a shallow party agenda item ahead of solving the COVID-19 crisis. Reach Rep. Echols at (405) 557-7354 or jon.echols@okhouse.gov.
Fill out Planned Parenthood of the Great Plains letter to lawmakers.
Follow us on social media for updates. If or when the bill comes up for a vote we will let the public know, and show you where you can watch a live stream of the hearing.
Thank you for taking action! Your voice is powerful, and we’re so glad you use it to fight for reproductive freedom!
